Understanding Moon Phases
Phase | Appearance | Description | Day |
---|---|---|---|
New Moon | Moon is between Earth and Sun. The illuminated side faces away from Earth, making it invisible. | 1 | |
Waxing Crescent | A sliver of the Moon becomes visible as it moves away from alignment with the Sun. | 2-7 | |
First Quarter | Half of the Moon is illuminated and half is in shadow. The Moon is at a 90° angle to the Sun and Earth. | 8 | |
Waxing Gibbous | More than half of the Moon is illuminated as it approaches Full Moon. The visible area continues to increase. | 9-14 | |
Full Moon | The entire near side of the Moon is illuminated. Earth is between the Moon and Sun. | 15 | |
Waning Gibbous | The illuminated portion starts to decrease. More than half is still visible, but decreasing daily. | 16-21 | |
Last Quarter | Half of the Moon is illuminated again, but the opposite side compared to First Quarter. | 22 | |
Waning Crescent | A small crescent remains visible as the Moon approaches the New Moon phase again. | 23-29 |
The lunar cycle takes approximately 29.5 days to complete, from one new moon to the next. This is known as a synodic month.
